LocalChat Privacy Policy

LocalChat is a LAN-first chat, file-transfer, and audio/video call app. By default, your content moves between your own devices instead of being uploaded to a cloud server. This policy explains how LocalChat handles data in the app, website, and download service.

What we do not collect

LocalChat does not require an account and does not collect or upload these items to LocalChat servers:

• Chat message bodies, images, videos, voice messages, or file contents.
• Audio/video call audio, video frames, or call recordings.
• Contacts, SMS, calendar data, or precise GPS location.
• Data for ad profiling, cross-app tracking, or sale to third parties.

Data processed on your device

To connect nearby devices, LocalChat generates and stores device identity, connection records, chat lists, transfer history, receive folders, and app settings on your device. This data is used to show history, recognize trusted devices, and continue local transfer workflows.

Local network and nearby discovery

LocalChat uses local network, mDNS/Bonjour, manual addresses, QR codes, Bluetooth, or Nearby/Wi-Fi capabilities to discover nearby devices and exchange connection information. These capabilities may process device names, local IP addresses, ports, connection codes, and temporary offers. They are used to establish device-to-device connections, not for advertising or location tracking.

Chat, file transfer, and calls

When you send messages, files, or start a LAN call, content transfers between the devices you choose. The LocalChat website server does not receive, store, or relay chat content, file content, or call media. Received files and images are saved to the location you choose or that the operating system allows.

Permissions

LocalChat requests permissions only when a feature needs them. Permission names may vary by platform.

• Camera: scan connection QR codes, take photos, and make video calls.
• Microphone: voice messages, audio calls, and video calls.
• Photos, files, or storage: choose media/files to send and save received content.
• Local network, Wi-Fi, and internet: discover devices, connect to local HTTP services, and transfer content.
• Bluetooth, Nearby, or nearby devices: discover devices and exchange connection information.
• Notifications: show new message, file, or incoming call alerts.

Remote rooms and future signaling

LocalChat may provide remote rooms or signaling services to exchange connection offers, WebRTC candidates, or temporary room state when direct discovery is not convenient. The purpose is to help two devices establish a connection, not to store chat or file contents in the cloud. If this service is enabled, we will update this policy with retention and handling details.

Website and download logs

When you visit localchat.me or download an installer, the server may create standard access logs such as request time, path, HTTP status, browser or downloader identifier, and IP address information for security and troubleshooting. We use these logs to protect the website, diagnose download issues, and measure aggregate downloads. We do not use them for advertising profiles or sell them to third parties.

Third-party services

If you install LocalChat through Google Play, Apple App Store, or another store, that store may process download, payment, crash report, or install statistics under its own policies. The LocalChat website does not currently embed third-party advertising trackers.

Retention and deletion

You can delete chats, received files, or uninstall LocalChat to remove locally stored data. Website access logs are retained only as needed for security and operations, then deleted or rotated.

Children's privacy

LocalChat is for general users and is not directed specifically to children. We do not knowingly collect children's personal information. If you believe we have handled such information by mistake, contact us below.

Policy updates

When LocalChat adds new services, permissions, or data practices, we will update this page and show the new effective date.
